CASELLA ANNOUNCES NEW NOISE AT WORK COURSES FOR 2014

One-day ‘introduction-come-refresher’ training sessions held on 19 February in Warrington and 19 March in Kempston.

Leading global expert in occupational health and environmental risk monitoring solutions for the construction, mining & quarrying, government, oil & gas, pharmaceutical processing and chemical and consultancy sectors, Casella has announced new one-day noise courses for 2014.

Offering an introduction-come-refresher on workplace noise in accordance with the UK ‘Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005’, the courses will be held at parent company, Ideal Industries head office in Warrington on the 19th February and at Casella’s dedicated training facility in Kempston, Bedford on the 19th March.

Designed to help those whose role requires them to protect employees from hearing loss, the Noise at Work Courses are specially designed to provide a comprehensive insight into the subject matter.

Topics are set to include an introduction to acoustics, understanding terminology and the application of legislation.

Participants attending the day-long events will be given a chance to put Casella’s equipment through its paces, with both hand-held sound level meters and dosimeters available to use.

A practical noise assessment session, combined with sections on understanding noise data, producing reports, hearing protection calculation and selection, plus engineering noise control, will help ensure that all participants leave the course with a full understanding of how to control noise levels in their workplace.

CASELLA DEMOLISHES OPPOSITION WITH NOISE MONITORING EQUIPMENT AT FORSHAW

At the top of its game with more than 80 years in the demolition, dismantling and haulage industry, Walter Forshaw Ltd turned to another industry leader, expert in noise monitoring devices, Casella, when it wanted to upgrade its equipment.

Forshaw needed to monitor the environmental noise adjacent to its demolition sites for continuous periods in order to ensure that the work the company was conducting was not inconveniencing neighbours unduly.

Says Jeremy Wolstencroft, Operations Manager at Bolton-based Forshaw Demolition: “Having used Casella equipment before, we knew that the organisation manufactured high quality monitoring products. We wanted to be able to assess the noise levels at our sites throughout the course of each day and also to leave the units unmanned, if possible. Casella’s CEL-633 sound level meter allows us to do both.”

He continues: “Following some initial training, which was very helpful, the instrument has been put to good use. It is extremely easy to operate and the software is much improved compared to earlier Casella generations. I use the meter on site and also leave it on a timer on a daily basis when I am involved in other duties.”

The CEL-633, which complies with all the latest international standards for sound level meters, uses the latest technology and a high-resolution colour display to measure and impart occupational and environmental noise levels to the user.

The small, lightweight instrument allows users to make displayed data as simple or as comprehensive as needed and its 2GB memory stores more than a year of continuous data.

Audio recording is a standard feature, with voice notes possible to annotate results so that nothing needs to be written down.

Should a given level of noise be exceeded for a period of time when the monitor is unattended, it can be set to trigger audio recording and to collect additional data.

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL CHOOSES CASELLA SOUND LEVEL METER KITS

Latest 63x series helps assess noise levels at sites of submitted planning applications and assist with preparation of acoustic reports.

When Nottinghamshire County Council needed to upgrade its 20-year-old noise monitoring equipment, it made sense to choose two of the latest high performance sound level meter kits from Casella’s well proven 63x series.

Nottinghamshire County Council is the Mineral & Waste Authority so receives minerals and waste applications from external bodies including quarries (minerals) and waste processing/recycling sites. It also administers applications for its own developments such as roads and schools.

David Collins, Project Engineer, Landscape & Reclamation and Environment & Resources comments: “The ability to implement noise measurements is an essential requirement of my role at the Council. Our department delivers a range of acoustic services such as assessing noise levels at the site of a submitted planning application and preparing acoustic reports like Noise Impact Assessments or Baseline Noise Surveys. We also provide general guidance on noise issues.”

He continues: “One of our outdated sound level meters was a Casella model so we knew they were a trusted brand that also offered cost benefits. Reliability is essential as we carry out unattended noise measurements. The CEL-633 meets all our key requirements as it can be used to take long and short term environmental measurements and 1/3 octave band analysis plus calibration can be evidenced to ensure any noise data is accurate and will stand up to scrutiny.”

Nottinghamshire County Council received detailed training in the use of the CEL-633 from Casella. The company even sent a demonstration model so staff could familiarise themselves with the kit ahead of the half day course. David adds: “The training was very helpful in helping us understand the capabilities and benefits of the software which enables us to quickly download, analyse, save and export data."

Since being purchased, the Casella sound level meter kits have already been used for a baseline noise survey on a £16million ring road improvement scheme by Nottingham City Council. The project entailed setting up the equipment at 16 properties along a five mile stretch of the ring road for a period of 24 hours at a time. Further short term monitoring was implemented at a further five properties.

They have also helped with noise assessment of land owned by the Council for potential residential development. Measurements were taken at various positions around the site which is currently agricultural land to determine the noise exposure categories in accordance with the superseded guidance in Planning Policy Guidance 24 (PPG24) as requested by the Local District Authority Planners.

Baseline noise surveys have been conducted at three schools in Nottinghamshire on behalf of the Council’s property team. Data was used to inform noise impact assessments for the sites.

David concludes: The CEL-633 is very simple to operate in comparison to older sound level meters and we are particularly impressed with the easy to use menus, settings and analysis software. Casella has upgraded its popular Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge (TBRG) to create the STORM Guardian, an integrated design for reduced cost and ease of installation, which features a built-in logger with GRPS and lithium batteries that last for up to seven years.

The specialist in occupational health and environmental risk measurement solutions, which has experienced a 30% rise in demand for its popular TBRG sensor over the past couple of years, expects to see continued growth in this area of its business, with increasing need to monitor rainfall, especially for flood prediction.

Leicestershire Police has upgraded its noise monitoring equipment, selecting a Casella Health & Safety Kit in order to help to protect its officers.

A global specialist in occupational health and environmental risk management solutions, Casella has supplied a 62x series sound level meter and a dBadge Noise Dosimeter to the regional police force, both of which are known to be easy to use, reliable and accurate.

Matt Jones, Deputy Principal Health and Safety Advisor, Corporate Services at Leicestershire Police, comments: “We have always used Casella products and were in the process of updating our equipment, so we liaised with our colleagues in Derbyshire Police and asked for their input.”

CASELLA TEAM TOPS THREE PEAKS FOR CANCER RESEARCH

When Gary Noakes lost his battle against cancer in 2012, aged just 51, his friends and work colleagues at Bedford-based Casella – global specialist in occupational health and environmental risk management solutions – were determined that his death would not be in vain.

Cancer Research UKChoosing Cancer Research as its charity partner seemed like a good place to start and a programme of fundraising activities was soon put together, but the likes of coffee mornings weren’t on the agenda for this hardy group. Instead they chose to embark on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge last month, a 24-mile walk across the highest peaks in the Dales.

Comments Ben Henson, Casella’s General Manager: “The team lost a dear colleague last year and wanted to do something positive in his memory. Unfortunately, the chances are we have all known someone who has suffered at the hands of cancer and this is our chance to fight back.”

Starting their trek together at just after 6am on 22nd June, the intrepid Casella group numbering 19 strong headed towards Pen-Y-Ghent, an ascent of 694 metres, reaching the summit at different times after a slippery climb that was almost vertical in places.

Having listened to the GPS and inadvertently taking a boggy route rather than a drier option, combined with the advent of a heavy rainstorm en route, some of the participants found the next eight miles or so rather challenging. As a result, two of the drenched and very tired team decided to call it a day.

However, the hardiest among them soldiered on, fortified by tea and bacon and egg baps, to hike up the second peak, Whernside.

Having successfully negotiated the steep, treacherous descent, the exertion caused more of the Casella fundraisers to decide against continuing, their aches, pains and injuries telling them to call it a day.

Cold, wet, tired and hungry, the remainder of the group continued onwards and upwards to complete Ingleborough, the third peak, with 13 of them achieving the entire challenge, their finishing times varying from 10 hours 14 minutes to 14 hours.

Commenting on the experience, Neal Hill, Product Marketing Manager at Casella said: “This was very much a personal challenge for each of us and it struck me that it was also a metaphor for the very cause that we were walking for. Some fell by the wayside early on but the majority made it. I’m sure Gary would have been immensely proud of us all.”

Cancer Research UKAs Casella Measurement launches its new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Policy, it is particularly apt that the specialist in occupational health and environmental monitoring equipment has chosen Cancer Research UK as its charity partner, since use of the company’s dust measuring devices play an important part in the fight against lung cancer.

The link with the charity is also seen as a fitting legacy in memory of Gary Noakes, a key member of the Casella team who sadly passed away from cancer in 2012, aged just 51.

Ben Henson, General Manager at Casella said: “We wanted to offer our time, energy and fundraising efforts to a worthwhile cause that is close to everyone’s hearts. Unfortunately cancer affects everyone’s lives and as a team we too have felt its devastating effects.”

Casella’s work in the occupational health industry highlights the importance of research into the prevention of occupational diseases, such as cancer. The organisation’s workplace measurement equipment helps to fight to reduce the effect of external influences on cancer such as dust.

Ben adds: “We hope that our planned programme of fund raising activities will also help Cancer Research UK to tackle the internal variants that could lead to cancer, especially in their DNA based research.”

Stealth Noise Nuisance Recorder (N.N.R)International construction services company, ISG Plc, is using Noise Nuisance Recorder (NNR) kits from Casella CEL to monitor noise levels on a £16 million project to refurbish and upgrade City Tower in Basinghall Street, London.

The refurbishment and remodelling contract encompasses work across 10 floors of the 21-storey office building – approximately 80,000 sq ft, some of which will remain occupied by office workers throughout the duration of the project.

Five Casella CEL NNR kits, using CEL-632 Sound Level Meter technology, are distributed throughout the building, positioned on tenanted floors adjacent to work areas, in order to monitor sound levels and ensure that they remain below the acceptable threshold.

Simon Featherstone, ISG’s Senior Construction Manager on the project, which is situated just 200 metres from the Barbican complex, comments: “On all of our construction and refurbishment sites it is important to maintain good relations with tenants and neighbours by ensuring that we do not cause too much noise pollution.”

He continues: “Casella was recommended by one of our Project Managers who had used their products on a previous job. We were looking in particular for a noise monitoring device that was compact and easy to use, combined with an effective noise reporting system at a reasonable price. The Noise Nuisance Recorder and CEL-632 Sound Level Meter fitted our brief.”

An on-site Tenant Liaison Manager is in constant contact with the office workers, the noise monitors are checked regularly and information downloaded weekly to ensure correct noise levels are maintained in tenanted offices.

Noise is generally kept below the threshold level, however, when work has to be carried out that will create excessive noise levels, ISG liaises with the tenant and conducts the work at a mutually convenient time.

Using the latest digital technology and a high resolution colour display, the CEL-632 is designed to measure noise levels as quickly and simply as possible in order to guarantee compliance with workplace noise legislation and to protect hearing.

The displayed information can be made as simple or comprehensive as required and all measurement parameters are stored simultaneously, so no incorrect measurements can be made.

Easy to use and auto-calibrate, the device features audio recording allowing the user to speak into the microphone before or after a measurement in order to annotate the result, so there’s no need to write anything down. It also incorporates pre-configured setups for occupational and environmental measurements with a 2GB memory for more than a year of data storage.

Simon concludes: “The monitors are reliable and accurate and it is easy to download data from them in no time at all which is a real benefit.”

Human vibration monitor aims to reduce ill health

Efficiency and cost-effectiveness were two of the reasons behind Cheshire West and Chester Council’s selection of a CEL-960 Human Vibration Monitor from specialist manufacturer, Casella CEL to help protect staff from the effects of prolonged use of certain equipment.

The unitary Council, which employs more than 12,000 staff in the North West of England, was looking for a reliable, compact and easy-to-use device that would assist with its programme of monitoring park rangers and streetscene employees, who are exposed to the hazards of hand-arm vibration during the course of their work.

According to Eric Burt, Health and Safety Manager at Cheshire West and Chester Council, they needed to find the best means of measuring exposure levels to vibration.

He says: The CEL-960’s Bluetooth feature enables us to take and analyse measurements in-situ, without having to return to the office to download and analyse the results, which is a much more efficient way of working!”

Eric continues: “The price of the meter was another consideration. Not only was it competitive with other similar products that we looked at, but the on-going cost of calibration was a significant factor too. We were obviously keen to ensure good value for money for the Council’s investment.”

The Council, which already uses Casella’s noise dosimeter and dust monitoring device, is now in the process of reviewing its programme of vibration monitoring.

Initially, the CEL-960 will be used by members of the Health & Safety Team to review existing vibration exposure levels and risk assessments for key employees who use equipment such as hand-held power tools and mobile machinery on a regular basis.

The lightweight, cutting-edge CEL-960 is designed to measure ‘hand-arm’ (HAV) and ‘whole-body’ (WBV) vibrations, according to the requirements of European Directive 2002/44/EC.

It aims to reduce or eliminate the risks associated with vibration, including painful and disabling disorders of the blood vessels, nerves and joints, as well as severe back pain caused by shocks and jolts when operating work vehicles over rough or uneven surfaces.
With just one button to operate, it is exceptionally simple to measure exposure to HAV and WBV using the CEL-960. Remote operation via Bluetooth to a laptop or tablet PC also means
that the person conducting the measurement does not get in the way of the machine operator whose exposure levels are being monitored, allowing a better quality of data to be collected.

Comprising an acquisition unit, signal processing, data storage and data transfer, the CEL-960 measures tri-axial vibration levels and has options for signal and 1/3 octave spectrum recording. It also features a presence detector (for whole body vibration) and warning light.

Fully compliant with standards ISO 8041 (2005), ISO 5349 (2001) and ISO 2361 (1997), the CEL-960 comes complete with transducer, desktop charger giving up to 20 hours’ operating time, dB96 wireless remote control software, carrying case, CD and documentation.

NEW NOISE AT WORK COURSE A GREAT SUCCESS

Leading global specialist in industrial hygiene and occupational health monitoring equipment, Casella CEL, has held a new one-day course offering an introduction-come-refresher on workplace noise in accordance with the UK ‘Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005’.

Designed to help those whose role requires them to protect employees from hearing loss, the Noise At Work Course at Casella’s dedicated training facility in the company’s head office in Kempston, Bedford, provided a comprehensive insight into the subject matter.

Topics included an introduction to acoustics, understanding terminology and the application of legislation.

The 25 participants who attended the day-long event, were also given a chance to put Casella’s equipment through its paces, with both hand-held sound level meters and dosimeters available to use.

A practical noise assessment session, combined with sections on understanding noise data, producing reports, hearing protection calculation and selection, plus engineering noise control, ensured that all participants left the course with a full understanding of how to control noise levels in their workplace.

Commenting on the course, Paul Coster of Canary Wharf Management said: “Good delivery by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructor.”

Following a competitive tender process, the Australian Department of Defence has taken delivery of 180 TUFF personal air sampling pumps and 180 CEL-350 dBadge personal noise dosimeters from Casella CEL, leading global specialist in industrial hygiene and occupational health monitoring equipment.

Ronald Azar, Business Manager at Casella’s Australian distributor, Stantron, said: “Defence personnel were looking for pumps to measure air quality during training exercises and whilst working on Defence equipment. CASELLA’S CEL-120 ACOUSTIC CALIBRATOR ACHIEVES
GERMANY’S PTB APPROVAL

CEL-120 acoustic calibratorCasella CEL - leading global specialist in industrial hygiene and occupational health monitoring equipment - has announced that its compact CEL-120 acoustic calibrator has recently achieved Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) approval.

The PTB is Germany’s National Institute for Natural and Engineering Sciences and is the country’s highest technical authority for metrology, similar in standing to the UK’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL).

Launched a year ago, the CEL-120 is believed to be one of the world’s smallest acoustic calibrators and is designed to facilitate the highly accurate calibration of Sound Level Meters in the field.

Casella’s CEL-620 Sound Level Meter is already similarly approved and will now benefit from being paired with the CEL-120 making it ideal for workplace noise monitoring.

Ben Henson, Casella Measurement’s General Manager comments: “The CEL-120 sailed through the raft of testing without a hitch and we were never in any doubt that we would get the approval.”

Type approval, although not required in the UK, is also ‘on the agenda’ in Spain where the Measuring Instruments Directive 2004 is locally implemented to include noise measuring instrumentation.

Testing included checking the acoustic and environmental performance against the requirements of IEC 60942:2003.

Calibration is an essential procedure when conducting any type of noise survey both before and after each measurement sequence. The process ensures that instruments are providing consistently precise readings necessary for monitoring to ensure compliance with workplace and environmental noise regulations.

Fully compliant with IEC 60942:2003 and ANSI S1.40:2006 standards, Casella’s new CEL-120 acoustic calibrator, which measures just 75mm x 54mm x 37mm, incorporates the latest digital technology to ensure exceptionally stable acoustic performance, as well as dual calibration level (Class 1 version) of 94 dB and 114 dB at 1khz.

For added ease-of-use benefits, the CEL-120 features a simple keypad for intuitive control, permitting calibration level changes as required. When used with instruments such as Casella’s well proven CEL-620 series of sound level meters, calibration routines start automatically as soon as a calibration tone is detected.

A MEMS (MicroElectrical-Mechanical System) microphone and a digital feedback loop maintain the acoustic pressure in the cavity at the required level. An indicator shows if the sound level meter microphone is incorrectly inserted into the cavity, removing any potential for calibration error. An energy-saving automatic power off function helps ensure batteries last for up to two years.

Sultanate of Oman’s Ministry of Regional Municipalities & Water Resources (MRMWR) has recently installed additional Casella Monitor (www.casellameasurement.com; 01234 844100) Tipping Bucket Rain Gauges (TBRGs) in the Arab country’s more remote mountainous and desert areas.

The MRMWR currently has in excess of 200 Casella Monitor TBRGs installed at a wide range of locations across Oman. The systems, which were originally chosen by the customer for their reliable performance during testing, as well as accurate data and ease of use benefits, have been customised by Casella to cope with the Oman’s harsh environment.

In accordance with the roles assigned to it in Royal Decree No 55/2006, the MRMWR relentlessly strives to provide water and municipal services to communities within the regions of the Sultanate, and establish vital facilities and infrastructure aimed at improving living conditions.

Turney continues: “Accumulated run results are also available in terms of the time average level Lavg decibel level measured so far. Both of these values are produced with the key threshold values of 80 and 90 dB as per the OSHA workplace noise regulations.”

Previously all CEL-350 run values were suppressed on screen during a run and were not available for viewing until the run was stopped. The intention was to secure the display against being seen by the wearer and minimise the likelihood of results being falsified.

Customers now have the option of locking the unit display to prevent the results from being viewed during a run by unauthorised personnel. It is also possible to set the run to last for a fixed duration from 30 minutes up to 12 hours in 30-minute increments.

Another benefit of the changes is that a total of seven screens are now displayed individually for approximately five seconds each before moving on to the next. This allows the supervisor enough time to see the results that are of interest without having to wait too long before moving to the next screen.

Casella’s CEL-350 dBadge range also includes the ‘Lite’ model, which offers simple functionality at a very affordable price, ensuring that cost need not be a deterrent to safety. The

'Lite' measures all the same occupational noise parameters as the original dBadge except for the time history of exposure to noise levels, so is ideal for users needing straightforward noise dose results at low cost.

Casella CEL is offering all of the latest changes as standard in future dBadge dosimeters and, as they can be reprogrammed into older CEL-350 hardware, the changed v1.13 firmware will be used to upgrade existing models.

In addition, the newly enhanced unit can be locked to prevent results from being viewed by unauthorised personnel.

The digital, cable-free CEL-350 Series of Dosimeters or Personal Noise Exposure Meters accurately measure all occupational noise parameters, and gives the time history of an individual's noise exposure throughout the day via a built-in graphic display.

The air sampling process takes a volume of air through a sampling medium. This is normally paper or solid filter media for particulates and fumes, and through sorbent materials for gases and vapours. Impingers and bubblers can also be used, or a grab sample taken into a gas sampling bag. The volume of air is measured and calculated as a concentration expressed as mg / m3 or parts per million (ppm).

Casella CEL now offers a complete suite of sampling media for particulates, dusts and fumes. These include a wide selection of filters which are used in conjunction with sampling heads or as integral sampling cassettes.

A variety of sampling heads and cassettes are available for asbestos, total inhalable, respirable and other dust fractions. All are designed for use with a controlled rate of air provided using a personal air sampling pump. Sampling media is placed within the heads directly, or using cassettes, and the sample is analysed or weighed afterwards.

Solvents, gases and vapours are sampled actively using air sampling pumps and sorbent tubes, into bubblers, gas bags or passively using diffuse sampling badges.

Direct reading colour detection tubes are glass vials filled with chemical reagents that react to a specific chemical or family of chemicals. A known volume sample is drawn through the tube via a hand syringe for a set number of pulls – indicated on the tube. It the targeted chemical is present, the regent in the tube changes colour, with the length of the colour read against a concentration scale on the tube, giving an instantaneous indication of the concentration in the air.

Casella CEL’s TUFF™ personal air sampling pumps offer the user an extremely robust, rubber over-moulded unit specifically designed for use in harsh monitoring environments.  TUFF pumps are ideally suited to a wide range of occupational health sampling applications from simple abatement sampling of lead and asbestos to a more specialised industrial hygiene monitoring of dusts, fumes and vapours. TUFF systems offer a wide flow rate from 5ml/min to 4.5L/min.

A unique customer reference number is generated by the online system, allowing all discussions and issues to be tracked easily, and providing a full audit trail of the process until the support issue is brought to a resolution.

The latest upgrade of Casella CEL's insight occupational exposure data management software means that it can now be used in conjunction with the company's popular Microdust Pro real-time monitor to automatically download, manage and report data, so providing exceptionally reliable results when conducting workplace inhalation risk assessments.

Casella CEL's dBadge noise dosimeters benefit from an improved design and a new, low-cost, model

Casella CEL has redeveloped its popular lightweight and cable-free dBadge noise dosimeter to increase its robustness, allowing the dosimeter to be used in the harshest of environments with absolute reliability.

Owing to its popularity for use in mining applications, the redeveloped dBadge now features rubber over-moulding on the case to further increase toughness, and provide protection from the water and dust prevalent in mines or similar environments.

Casella has also added a new model to its noise dosimetry range, the CEL-350L dBadge 'Lite', which offers simple functionality at a very affordable price. The 'Lite'
measures all the same occupational noise parameters as the original dBadge except for the time history of exposure to noise levels, so is ideal for users needing straightforward noise dose results at low cost.

Casella CEL's TUFF range gains ATEX approval

Casella CEL's ground-breaking TUFF range of Personal Air Sampling Pumps, the most rugged pump for use in harsh monitoring environments on the market, has gained ATEX (and IECEx) Intrinsically Safe approval for use in flammable atmospheres. This means the TUFF pumps can be used at hazardous plants and production sites where there is a potential risk of explosive dust or gas.

Designed to European IP54 standards (protected from dust and splashing water), the TUFF also differs from ordinary handheld pumps in that it is the only Personal Air Sampling Pump in the world to receive certification to 'M1' classification required for mining applications, allowing it to be safely used underground without the need for a hot work permit.
